On 28 August, the fishing boat suffered gearbox failure, and it was then adrift in the sea at around 70 nautical miles south from the Tri Ton Island, part of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago.

After receiving an SOS message, the Viet Nam Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (Viet Nam MRCC) asked fishing boats operating nearby to help the boat in distress. Meanwhile, the agency helped the boat’s crew members to contact technical experts from the mainland to ask for technical instructions to deal with the problem, as well as to take measures to ensure their safety.

Two days later, the boat’s crew members were unable to solve the problem and their boat continued to be adrift in strong level 6/7 winds, rough seas and sea waves to a height of up to 3m. Also, they ran out of stockpiled food and freshwater, and there was no fishing boat operating nearby.

Under the direction of the Viet Nam Maritime Administration, the Viet Nam MRCC asked the Da Nang MRCC to send out its rescue ship SAR 412, carrying doctors from the Emergency Centre 115, to help fishing boat in distress.

At 11.15pm on 30 August, SAR 412 reached the fishing boat, and all the crew members were transferred to the rescue ship for first aid.

At around 6.30am on 1 September, the fishermen and fishing boat in danger were safely brought back to the mainland.

At that time, leaders of Viet Nam MRCC visited and presented gifts from the Ministry of Transport and the Viet Nam Maritime Administration to the rescued victims.
