Some urbanisation of Son Tra Peninsula suggested

DA NANG Today
Published: March 26, 2014

The Chairman of the Viet Nam Urban Planning and Development Association, Dr Tran Ngoc Chinh, recently suggested that an urban area should be built on part of Da Nang’s Son Tra Peninsula.  His idea is to develop a luxury hotel complex in combination with the construction of entertainment areas to satisfy the increasing demands of foreign visitors as well as to attract tourists in the future.

According to Chairman Chinh, high-end holiday resorts, hotels and villas, could be constructed at the foot of the peninsula, with none more than 100m above sea level.  The construction of such an area will help Da Nang to fully tap the potential of local land resources.  The bustling area, full of vitality, will create closer links between the peninsula and the inner-city, and create a prosperous zone somewhat like Hong Kong, Macau and Vung Tau City.  Moreover, with a unique architectural design, the luxury hotel complex would promote the development of the city’s urban space.  Most notably, it will have the most amazing panoramic views of the city from the peninsula.

Chairman Chinh also stressed the need to carefully consider issues relating to the city’s defence, forest landscapes, nature protection, erosion, and legal institutions.  This will help the city make plans to effectively exploit the great potential of the Son Tra Peninsula.  He also affirmed that the peninsula plays an important role in ensuring the defence of the northeastern approaches to the inner-city because of its favourable geographical position.  He added that in the current context of global integration, local authorities should be more open-minded about the development of urban areas in the future, although national security-related issues should be taken into account.

The Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, Mr Van Huu Chien, expressed his strong support for the suggestions.  He added that the city has made significant breakthroughs in urban planning management in recent years.  Therefore, this is a good time to develop an urban area on the Son Tra Peninsula to help make Da Nang a liveable and world-class city in the near future.
