Flag-hoisting ceremony held to debut navy's first sailing ship

The Vietnamese Navy High Command on March 10 conducted a flag-hoisting ceremony for the first sailing ship of the country’s navy at the Viet Nam Naval Academy in Khanh Hoa Province's Nha Trang City.

The sailing ship, named after the outstanding Vietnamese scholar Le Quy Don from the 18th century, was built at the Marine Projects shipyard in Poland and launched in June, 2015. It was part of the scientific-technological cooperation plan between the armies of Viet Nam and Poland .

At 67 metres long and 10 metres wide, the 286 Le Quy Don sailing ship weighs 857 metric tonnes and has three 40-metre high masts.

The ship arrived in Viet Nam after an 18,000-nautical mile voyage with a mixed Polish and Vietnamese crew onboard, crossing the Baltic Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and Pacific Ocean .

The 286 Le Quy Don will be used for training and international exchanges.
