A fresh tropical depression became a remnant low early morning Saturday, dumping more widespread torrential rains on central and south-central Viet Nam, Viet Nam’s National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said.

A section of Tran Thanh Tong Street in Son Tra District was inundated on Friday afternoon.

At 4.00 am today, 17 October, the post-tropical remnant low no longer had characteristics required for a tropical cyclone, and it was centered right on Southern Laos with maximum sustained winds near its centre at below 39kph.

The remnant low will bring more heavy downpours to central regional localities into next Wednesday. The affected areas which have been struggling to recover from more than a week of devastating flooding, are now suffer zero respite as they are set to brace for a new wave of flooding.

Workers from the Da Nang Water Drainage and Wastewater Treatment Company (DWTC) were busy opening main sewers along local streets for rainwater to quickly drain away on Friday afternoon.

A threat of widespread flooding in central localities, including Da Nang, is highly possible in the coming days.

The total rainfall recorded in Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces will be 400-700 mm and over 800 mm in some parts of these provinces during that period. Between 400mm and 500mm of rain will fall in Thua Thien –Hue Province, even over 500mm in some of its parts.

Da Nang and its neighbouring Quang Nam Province should expect rainfall of 300mm- 400 mm, even over 450mm in some of their parts, while regions between Quang Ngai and Phu Yen should expect levels of up to 350 mm.

The soaking rain may persist in central and south-central Viet Nam even after 21 October, the national forecasters said.

In the coming days, Vu Gia River and others which flow through Da Nang are predicted to swell up considerably with the threat of flood levels 2-3 due to the floodwater discharge from the spillways of upstream hydropower reservoirs amid prolonged heavy rains, hereby posing a severer flooding threat to downstream and low-lying areas.

The Da Nang government is now constantly urging functional local bodies to take a handful of proactive response to inundation, flashfloods, and mudslides which may occur in many low-lying areas citywide, specially those in the suburb districts of Hoa Vang and Lien Chieu.
