Earlier on 3 and 4 September, an amount of black wastewater was found discharging directly into the sea.

This matter caused environmental pollution and unpleasant odour to some families living nearby, especially beachgoers, thereby sparking deep concern amongst the general public.

Nguyen Phuong, a resident living nearby on Vo Nguyen Giap, Man Thai Ward, the discharged wastewater left a pungent odour wafting though the surrounding areas, especially at dusk and in the evening.

After having detected the case, the municipal and district-level authorities have been actively in handling this matter.

The municipal Drainage and Waste Water Treatment Company has taken measures to prevent wastewater being discharged directly into the sea. Alongside, the Son Tra District authorities, in a prompt fashion, tracked down environmental protection regulation violators.

The Son Tra District People’s Committee imposed a fine of 15 million VND upon the Da Nang - Coral Reef Dive Centre for its illegal dumping of wastewater.

In addition, the company was also required to take environmental improvement measures.

In reality, marine tourism is growing rapidly in the tourist-packed district. Therefore, such an illegal untreated wastewater discharge into the sea, indeed, blights the city’s tourist environment.

It is high time for the municipal Drainage and Waste Water Treatment Company and relevant local agencies to increase their checks, tighten the monitoring of wastewater discharge activities, and promptly deal with any violations.
