Shortage of coaches in local public passenger transport companies

By late last year, Da Nang had 18 public passenger transport providers together owning a total of 327 fixed-route coaches, which meant that on average each company had only 18 vehicles.  This figure is very modest in comparison with the transport companies in Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh, Hai Phong and Can Tho cities.

The General Director of the city’s Transportation and Bus Station Management Company, Mr Le Viet Hoang, said that some of the city’s public passenger transport companies now have only between 2 and 3 coaches each.  This has resulted in fierce competition amongst local transport companies, and creates difficulties in ensuring traffic safety in the city.

To solve the problems, Mr Hoang has proposed that the Ministry of Transportation should issue a regulation requiring each local public passenger transport company to have at least 20 vehicles.

Last year saw a dramatic increase in the number of newly-established transport service providers in the city, but a decrease in the total volume of means of transport.  This caused difficulties for the management work of local relevant agencies, especially in ensuring the traffic safety of passenger vehicles, and for the building of brand names of the local businesses.

With the low number of passenger transport vehicles, the city’s transport companies are finding it very difficult to build their own images and brand names, and increase the efficiency of their operation.
