Last weekend, a requiem ceremony took place at the Phuoc Ninh Cemetery in Nam Duong Ward, Hai Chau District, Da Nang, to commemorate revoluntionary soldiers who sacrificed their lives for national liberation during the first years of the resistance against the French troops.

The biannual event which was in recognition of 160 years since the French colonialists attacked Da Nang and began the war to invade Viet Nam in 1858, also aimed at inspiring the young generations to uphold the ardent patriotism.

A total of more than 1,500 remains of martyrs has been reburied in the Phuoc Ninh Cemetery. It was recognised by the Ministry of Culture (now known as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) as a national-level historical relic site in 1988.

In particular, the municipal government is now asking the Ministry to recognise this venue as a national treasure.

Also the same day, a presentation contest on historical figures and relic sites, launched by the Hai Chau District People's Committee of Hai Chau, attracted a large number of competitors from 13 wards.

The majority of the presentations highlighted stories about General Nguyen Tri Phuong (1800 - 1873), a famous general who commanded an army and civilians in fighting against French-Spanish coalition forces in 1858 - 1860.
