Course to deal with nuclear and radiological incidents

A training course to provide guidance on dealing with nuclear and radiological incidents and emergencies is taking in Da Nang from 6-10 August.

The 5-day event is being jointly held by the Da Nang Department of Science and Technology, the Viet Nam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety under the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), a United States federal government agency responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science.

Trainees are representatives from the city’s steering board for radiation and nuclear emergency response, local incident response teams, and the departments of Science and Technology in Central Key Economic Region localities.

Under the training programme, the trainees are being introduced to basic knowledge on radiation, threats to nuclear and radiation security, control measures, personal protective equipment, radioactive contamination detection devices, and reclamation of radioactive waste contaminated territories.

In addition, the participants are learning more about radiation solutions and radiation emergency assessment.

Also within the framework of the training, experts from the US Department of Energy are introducing the trainees to more than 40 modern radiological detection and response systems such as personal devices, radioisotope identification devices and physiological equipment.
