At the ongoing 27th SEA Games in Myanmar, swimmer Hoang Quy Phuoc from Da Nang fell short of expectations when he only finished in fourth place in the men’s 100m butterfly, and finished last in the 50m freestyle.

In addition, Phuoc was beaten into silver medal position in his favourite event, the 100m freestyle, in a time of 50.52 secs.  Although this broke his own record of 50.79 secs set at the 26th SEA Games in Indonesia in 2011, he came behind Triady Fauzi Sidiq from Indonesia who won in a time of 49.99 secs.

After these disappointments, Phuoc bounced back to successfully defend his gold medal in the men’s 200m freestyle on Monday afternoon, winning in a time of 1 min 50.64.

Despite not being as successful as he was in the previous SEA Games, Phuoc has fulfilled a promise he made to his late father by bringing home a gold medal.
