Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said on 19 March that a special court will be set up to address promptly corruption-related cases in Southeast Asian nation.

The special court will focus on dealing with corruption cases in line with the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP), the PM said.

He said the reason why the government is doing this is because it was found that corruption trials are currently “regarded as ordinary trials”, without any priority.

The establishment of the special court will require some laws as it is supposed to change the nature of the courts, he said.

The judges for the special court must be appointed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, while the power of prosecution will come from the Attorney-General, he added.
