The Mid-Central Region Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting issues flood warnings for Vu Gia River and other rivers in Da Nang from Thursday until Sunday, December 4 as Vu Gia River could face flood risk with floodwater expected to peak from 2 - 4m at its upstream area and 0.5 – 1.5m at its downstream area.

Flood alerts are in place in Da Nang from Thursday as rivers are expected to rise following heavy rain. The water level in rivers in Vu Gia River and other rivers in Da Nang is likely to reach its peak to reach alarm below or above level 1.

Flooding is possible and people should be prepared, the regional weather service says.

Song Bung 4, Dak Mi 4, and A Vuong hydropower plants have been asked to increase water release from their reservoirs into the downstream of the Vu Gia River in order to make sure that water levels are lowest at their reservoirs not later than 7:00am on Thursday in an effort to cope with heavy rains which could triggered flooding in high-risk areas in line with the direction from the Quang Nam Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defence.

The three hydropower plants have been urged to take action in line with inter-reservoir operation regulations on the Vu Gia Thu Bon River basin in a bid to help reduce flood risk in the downstream of the Vu Gia River. In addition, importance must be attached to ensuring that discharges from their reservoirs do not cause sudden and abnormal rise in the river’s water levels to post a direct threat on the lives and properties of people living along downstream of these reservoirs.
