On Wednesday, the Da Nang Department of Natural Resources and the Environment embarked upon covering the existing garbage burial sites at the Lien Chieu District-based Khanh Son Landfill with large-sized water-proof tarpaulin sheets.

The placement of the canvas sheets over these dumping areas which cover a total area of 9ha is scheduled to be completed no later than 31 December.

This project’s aim to solve the environmental pollution at the city’s main landfill, alleviate leachate-caused sickening stench wafting off the burial sites and prevent rainwater from seeping into them, especially during the rainy season.

District-level agencies and the city’s Urban Environment Company has already asked “garbage pickers” salvaging the recyclable materials from trash dumps for sales to move their makeshift tents out of these dump sites so that the project can progress on track.
