The exhibition is joint collaboration among the Department of Fine Arts, Photography and Exhibition under the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Department of Culture and Sports, craft village associations, organisations and individuals.

The exhibition will display over 100 sets of unique lacquer products created by many painters, artisans across the city.

The products displayed in the exhibition are rich and diverse in form and expression, using traditional materials.

This activity aims to encourage the creation of more lacquer artworks for their domestic and international consumption, and in tandem with contributing to preserving and promoting the brand and value of Vietnamese lacquerware and building a cultural industry.

First adopted in Viet Nam since around 1930, lacquer artworks in the early days were the combination of traditional lacquer resin and the artists’ time-consuming process of polishing the finish several times with water to create satisfactory colored layers.

Lacquer is typically used in paintings and applied onto other handicraft items, such as statues, decorativewares and horizontal boards engraved with Chinese characters, as a tasteful, highly durable cover.

The traditional Vietnamese lacquer used in ‘son mai’is made by mixing the resin from a Japanese wax tree with natural pigments to create different coloured paints.
