International triathlons to be held next month

Da Nang will host several international triathlon races over the 1st weekend in May.

The 2017 VNG Ironman 70.3 Viet Nam will take place on 7 May.  This will be the 3rd consecutive year that this event has been held in the city, and it is expected to attract around 1,400 athletes from a total of 52 countries and territories around the world.

To date, 360 have already registered to participate.

Under the competition’s rules, participants will compete in a 1.9km swim from the Son Thuy Beach, a 2-loop 90km cycling race, and a 21km run along the coastline.

The route of the cycling race will be Son Thuy bathing area - Truong Sa - Vo Nguyen Giap - Hoang Sa - Le Van Luong - Le Duc Tho - Thuan Phuoc Bridge - Nguyen Tat Thanh, and then back to the start point. 

Meanwhile, the 21km run will follow a 2 lap course from the Son Thuy bathing area along Vo Nguyen Giap and then back to the start point.

Most notably, Cyril Viennot and Caroline Steffen, who took the top spots in the 2016 VNG Ironman 70.3 Viet Nam, will join this year’s event to defend their championship titles. 

In addition, 10 Vietnamese athletes in a team called ‘Showdown Da Nang’ will participate.  They have been selected for their outstanding performances in international competitions, or for gaining remarkable achievements in central region contests and at the VNG Ironman 70.3 events over the past 2 years.

Also on 7 May, another triathlon competition entitled ‘Sunrise Sprint’ (or S2) will take place in the city for the first time.  S2 is a short distance triathlon series featuring a 750m swim, a 20km cycling race, and a 5km run.  The event will be open to professional and amateur contestants from both home and abroad.  Contestants should register online at the contest’s website: http://ironman703vietnam.com/sprint/.

On 6 May, an Ironkids Viet Nam will be organised for domestic and foreign children aged between 6 and 14.  Contestants aged from 6 - 10 will participate in a 70m swim and a 1km run, whilst those from 11 - 14 will complete a 140m swim and a 2km run.  Registration for this event can be done through: http://ap.ironman.com/triathlon/events/asiapac/ironman-70.3/vietnam/festival-events.aspx#axzz4dFYWw0ny.

The Director of the municipal Department of Culture and Sports, Mr Huynh Van Hung, remarked, “Following the success of VNG Ironman 70.3 over the past 2 years, the city authorities plan to make it an annual event in the city for the next 5 years”.

The organisers of Ironman 70.3 Viet Nam, Sunrise Events Viet Nam, are making every effort to develop the event into one of the best triathlon competitions in Asia, and to make Da Nang the ideal place for hosting the Ironman 70.3 Asia competitions in the near future.
