Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and Lao Vice President Bounnhang Vorachith also attended the event.

The bridge links the Chiang Khong district of Chiang Rai province on the Thai side with Houay Xai capital of Bokeo province on the Lao side. It is expected to help promote their trade, investment and tourism with neighboring Southeast Asian nations and southern China.

The three other Thai-Lao bridges lie between the Nong Khai province of Thailand and the Lao capital Vientiane, the Nakorn Panom province of Thailand and the Khamouane province of Laos and the Mukdaharn province of Thailand and the Savannakhet province of Laos.
