Phan Chau Trinh – one of the best shopping streets in the city

Phan Chau Trinh is one of the busiest inner-city streets in Da Nang.  The over 1.9 km-long street runs from the junction between Le Loi and Phan Dinh Phung streets in the north to Trung Nu Vuong in the south.

During the period of French control, this street was called Rue Marc Pourpe.  In 1956, it was renamed after a national hero who was a poet and cultural expert in the early 20th century.  Phan Chau Trinh, also spelled Phan Chu Trinh, was born in 1872 in Quang Nam Province and he died in 1926 in Sai Gon.  He was a nationalist leader and reformer who played a vital role in the movement for Vietnamese independence and an end to France's brutal occupation of Viet Nam.  He was the leading proponent of a reformist programme that jointly aimed at expelling the French and restructuring Vietnamese society.  He devoted all of his life to the country's modernisation.

Phan Chau Trinh Street is one of the best places to shop in the city, with a large number of stores selling fashionable clothes, eyewear, footwear, jewellery, cosmetics and other items.  They include Miu Miu, Aria, Hippy, Caramel, Winny, Adidas and Bitis.  There are also numerous fabric stores such as the Central Region Fabric Centre and the Lan Huong and Hanh silk shops.  This street also boasts many luxury hotels such as the Thai Binh Duong (Pacific Ocean), Phuong Dong (Orient) and Moonlight.  Also on the street, there are many digital photo studios and labs including Truong Son, Anh Duc, Hoang Gia and Duc Loc.

Phan Chau Trinh Street is also home to many educational institutions, government agencies, healthcare centres and social organisations.  They include Lac Viet and Dong Du colleges, Dien Hong Senior High School, Duc Tri Pre-school, Alpha English Language Centre, the Department of Labour, War Invalids and Social Welfare, the Preventive Medical Centre, the Employment Service Centre, the Centre for Reproductive Health, the Women’s Union and the Da Nang Association for Supporting Poor and Disadvantaged Women and Children.

Visitors to Phan Chau Trinh have the opportunity to enjoy interesting musical performances at the Trung Vuong Theatre.  In addition, they will be fascinated by the Vietnamese cultural shows at the Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theatre.  It is a busy street, but you can also find some places offering peace and solitude, including the Tuong Quang, Pho Da and Tam Bao pagodas.

In the near future, Phan Chau Trinh Street will become one of six pilot specialised shopping streets which will offer tourism services and shopping activities to both locals and visitors.  This street is a real paradise for fashion lovers!
