Nguyen Chi Thanh - a peaceful street in the busy city

DA NANG Today
Published: October 18, 2013

Despite being one of the major inner-city streets in Da Nang, Nguyen Chi Thanh is different from the others in that it is very nice and peaceful.  The over 1.8 km-long street runs from Ly Thuong Kiet Street in the north to Le Hong Phong Street in the south, and it is currently one-way (southbound) for traffic.

During the period of French control, this street was called Rue Guillemin.  In early 1956, the northern section from Ly Thuong Kiet Street to Quang Trung Street was renamed Duy Tan Street, and from this point down to Ham Nghi Street it was called Nguyen Tri Phuong.  After 1975, Duy Tan Street was extended further south to Hung Vuong Street, and it was renamed after General Nguyen Chi Thanh.  In 1984, the street merged with Nguyen Tri Phuong Street to become one of the city’s major arterial routes.

The late General Nguyen Chi Thanh had been an outstanding contributor to the nation’s revolutionary cause, as well as to the building and development of the Viet Nam People’s Army.  He had held many different positions, including Director of the General Department of Politics of the Viet Nam People’s Army, Secretary of the Viet Nam People’s Army’s political and military headquarters in the south of Viet Nam, and Commissar of the Liberation Army in the south.  He was posthumously bestowed with the Golden Star Order, awarded the Ho Chi Minh Order, the First Class Military Feat Order, and other noble honours.

Nguyen Chi Thanh Street boasts numerous restaurants serving dishes from various Asian countries.  Bach Hoa Xuan and Saranghe offer Korean cuisine, Hoa Anh Dao and Kita Guni serve Japanese dishes, and Phi Lu has Chinese food.  There are two Vietnamese restaurants - Hong Ngoc offers a delicious chicken rice dish, and Dong Nuoc Cam Lo is vegetarian.  Visitors to this street also have the opportunity to enjoy a tasty dish from Da Nang called “bun cha ca” (fish cake noodles).

The street is also home to many handicraft shops, like the Cat Tuong silk flower shop, Cam Nhung with its Bat Trang ceramic and pottery products, Anna Flower, and Sister’s cross stitch showroom.

A visit to Nguyen Chi Thanh Street offers an unforgettable experience as you discover surprise features in our beautiful city!
