Hung Vuong – a key inner-city shopping street

DA NANG Today
Published: October 10, 2013

Hung Vuong is one of Da Nang’s major arterial routes and it links together several major parts of the city.  The over 1.6 km-long street runs from Bach Dang in the east to Ly Thai To Street in the west.

During the period of French control, the eastern section from Bach Dang to Phan Chau Trinh, was called Rue Dong Khanh.  From this point along to the crossroads with Ong Ich Khiem, by the current Con Market, it was called Avenue de la Republique.  After 1954, this section was renamed after Hung Vuong (the Hung kings).  In 1958, Hung Vuong was extended further west to the junction of Ly Thai To and Hoang Hoa Tham streets.  In 1980, the street merged with Rue Dong Khanh to become one of the major inner-city streets in Da Nang.

Vietnamese legends recount the rule of the 18 Hung king dynasties during the first period of Vietnamese history, between 2879 and 258 BC.  The death anniversary of the Hung kings always takes place on 10th March of the lunar calendar.  The worship of the Hung kings was recognised as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity at the 7th session of the UNESCO committee in Paris on 6 December 2012.

Hung Vuong is one of the city’s busiest streets with numerous shops which offer a vast range of different types of goods such as clothing, footwear, eyewear, headwear, children’s toys, household appliances, motorbikes and bicycles.  This street also boasts a number of stores selling different types of watches and clocks.  These include Duc Nghia, Phuoc Thanh, Hoang Vui and Nghia Tin.  Also on this street, there are two tailoring shops famous for making ao dai, the traditional outfit of Vietnamese women.  They are the Van Ha and Minh Tam tailors, and they are a good choice for those who are interested in the ao dai.

The beauty of the land and people of Viet Nam in general, and Da Nang in particular, can be enjoyed by visiting the numerous art galleries on this street, namely Duc Loi, Trung Chau and Anh Sang Fine Art galleries, and the Viet Tri Calligraphy Picture showroom.  In addition, Hung Vuong is home to the city’s Department of Health, the Da Nang Technical University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and many pharmacies.

Visitors to Hung Vuong have the opportunity to enjoy interesting musical performances at the Trung Vuong Theatre, which is the largest and most modern facility of its kind in the city, as well as to go shopping at the BigC Mall, the Han Market and the Con Market.  The latter, one of the city’s major markets, was constructed in the 1940s and rebuilt in 1985.  Despite its subsequent renaming as the Da Nang Trade Centre, it is still known locally as the Con Market.

Hung Vuong is a must for all shopaholics.  Enjoy it!
