121 killed, 120 injured in road accidents during Tet

Traffic accidents have claimed the lives of 121 people during the four days of Tet (Lunar New Year) starting onee14 February, according to the National Committee for Traffic Safety.

Another 120 were injured as 155 accidents occurred in that period.

In just 24 hours from 700.am on the New Year’s Day on the 16th February, 34 people were killed and 36 were injured.

The main causes of the accidents were drunk driving and speeding, the committee said, adding that most of the accidents took place in suburban and rural areas.

One of them involved a bus going from Da Lat to Dau Giay crashing into a motorcycle headed in the opposite direction, killing Nguyen Thi Thuy Hang, 21 and Nguyen Thi Thu Nguyet, 52, who were on it.

The accident occurred at 11.00am on  16 February in Dong Nai Province’s Dinh Quan District.

At 6.30pm on the same day two motorcycles crashed into each other in Ca Mau Province, killing three persons who were in their 20s and injuring a 16-year-old.

On the first two days of the new year the police issued 1,545 tickets for traffic violations, seized 746 vehicles and slapped fines of more than 413 million VND.
