Kind-hearted Buddhist nun

DA NANG Today
Published: December 24, 2015

Over recent years, the head of Da Nang’s Bao Quang Pagoda and the Social Charity Committee of the Da Nang Buddhist Sangha, Buddhist nun Dieu Canh, has become actively involved in helping poor and disadvantaged people.

At 6am every day, Dieu Canh and other Buddhist nuns and followers give free rice soup (chao) to poor patients in the local hospitals.  These include the Da Nang General, Hai Chau and Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation hospitals.  Apart from chao, they also provide free lunch portions to the Eye Hospital’s patients twice a week.

The kind-hearted nun has been appealing for donations from generous individuals and organisations to help the thousands of needy people nationwide.  Despite her old age, she has been actively involved in bringing relief aid, including food, books and notebooks, to those who live in the natural disaster-affected areas in Laos and Cambodia.

Recently, she donated 32 million VND in cash and over 100 gifts to naval soldiers and poor people on Quang Ngai Province’s Ly Son Island.

Between 2013 and 2015, she and the other members of the Social Charity Committee raised more than 10 billion VND to help thousands of local poor, single, elderly and ethnic minority people, Agent Orange-affected victims and disadvantaged children.

Of particular note, her pagoda is currently providing care for a number of local disabled and single elderly people.
