EIU Photo Class - new cultural exchange activity between Vietnamese and Korean pupils

The 16th Photo Class of Education for International Understanding (EIU Photo Class) themed ‘Light and Colours - Summer in Viet Nam’ has recently taken place in Da Nang.

This year’s event was jointly organised by the Asia-Pacific Centre of Education for International Understanding (APCEIU), the municipal Department of Education and Training, and some relevant agencies. It saw had the participation of 40 senior high school pupils from Da Nang and South Korea.

Mr Tran Nguyen Minh Thanh, Deputy Director of the city’s Department of Education and Training, said that the EIU Photo Class facilitated the participants to learn basic photography techniques and provided them practices to zoom in to the grace of their own culture. They observed and rediscovered the various aspects of their daily lives and expressed their own interpretations through photographs

He added the programme also helps to enhance mutual understanding amongst the participants from different backgrounds through cultural exchange activities.

During the one-week-long class, the Vietnamese and Korean pupils were taken to many popular tourist destinations in Viet Nam, such as Hue City, Da Nang, and Quang Nam Province’s Hoi An City.

Truong Nguyen Hoai Thu from Da Nang’s Phan Chau Trinh Senior High School said “I love photography so much. Therefore, taking part in the EIU Photo Class is the most exciting and unforgettable experience in my pupil life. During the class, we were taught wholeheartedly by professional photographers from South Korea”.

Tran Thi Thuc Nhi, a Year 11 from the city’s Tran Phu Senior High School, said that she learnt more about basic photography techniques such as how to choose best camera angles and lighting for photos, and tips for taking a good portrait photo, during the class.

Lee Juyeong from South Korea said he was very happy when making friends with Da Nang pupils. He emphasised apart from taking photography, he and other trainees visited historic relic sites and world cultural heritages in Da Nang, as well as were introduced to historical and cultural traditions of these sites, and the daily life of local residents, by Vietnamese pupils.

Hoai Thu added after 7 days of studying and playing, she became more mature and confident. She hoped that more useful exchange activities between the 2 countries would be organised in the future.
