Organised by the municipal Department of Construction, the contest aimed to make the soon-to-be-developed Central Square a multi-purpose public space where cultural exchange activities, events and festivals can take place.  The contest was open to both domestic and foreign design consultants.

The contest organisers received a total of 17 entries from 16 different design consultancies.  Five were from abroad - Denmark, Hong Kong, France, Belgium and the Netherlands - and the remainder were from domestic units.

All the entries featured a harmonious combination of the traditional, modern and global integration characteristics of the city, and they all received high praise from the contest’s judges for their high quality.
